WINSTON THE WONDER WHIPPET

Hello my name is Winston the Wonder Whippet I am the newest member of Paws for Diabetics Inc. I was born on 20 June I am one of 6 boy puppies my mummy's name is Maggie and my daddy's name is Turbo

I used to live in NSW with my mummy Maggie and my Daddy Turbo but I really really wanted to be a Paws for Diabetics Inc Puppy I pleaded with my owner Sharon to please please let me be the one to do this special job. My owner Sharon could see that I was a very special puppy as soon as I was born and so soon she agreed I was the one for the job.

One Friday night (5th September 2008) I was put in a crate and sent off to this really big place that had heaps of funny looking birdies with very big wings. Sharon told me not to be scared that I would be alright and told me not to cry I was at the airport. Sharon told me that soon my very important job would start so I really had to be a big brave puppy dog she then said goodbye to me and I was then loaded onto this big birdie thing. (I found out later this big birdie thing was called an airplane)

I didn't like being in my crate and I did not like being in the cargo hold with all of these strange big square things with handles (I was told later that these were called suit cases). These suit cases were so stuck up I tried to talk to them but they didn't answer me I don't know if it was because they didn't hear me or they were being rude or were they just pretending? I woofed and woofed at them all the way to Perth.

Soon I heard an announcement from the Captain to say that we all had to fasten our safety belts because the plane was now going to land. I looked and looked around for my safety belt thingy but I couldn't see it any where so I woofed and woofed hoping that the captain would hear me but he didn't. I then tried to let the suit cases know that I did not have a safety belt but they did not answer me. I started to get a bit worried.

Soon though we had landed safely and then everyone was starting to get off the Big Birdie thing but hang on they had forgotten about me so I woofed and woofed. I had started to get upset and was about to cry but then I remembered what Sharon had told me she said that I was not allowed to cry and soon I would start my new job

Very soon after that a man came with a truck and he loaded me in I was then taken over to the cargo area. That is where I met two little pussy cats they had been on an earlier flight and they were waiting for their new mummy to pick them up. I started to talk to them and I asked them what they thought about the Big Birdie thing they were real scaredy cats and they had both started to cry. I looked at them and told them not to cry and told them everything would be alright. I told them soon their mummy would come and take them home as I was talking to them and reassuring them the braver I felt. Soon I forgot I too had been afraid of the Big Birdie thing.

Soon after that the pussy cats mummy came and picked them up the pussy cats meowed and said goodbye to me and I woofed and said goodbye to them. Then it was my turn my mummy Kaylene was waiting for me with my daddy Andrew and my big sister Sarah. My daddy helped my mummy to open my crate and then my mummy picked me up. I loved being with my mummy as soon as she picked me up I could smell a very familiar smell and I got all excited I started to lick mummy and I started to whine and shake I do not know why I felt like this but my mummy told me I was a very very good boy and she gave me lots and lots of pats, hugs and kisses

Mummy and daddy tried to get me to have a drink and go to the toilet but I did not want to. I did not want my mummy to put me on the ground either because I did not want to her to stop hugging me and as soon as she did I told her to pick me up again. I could sense that my mummy really really really needed me and I did not want to leave her.

Mummy then told daddy and my big sister Sarah to please hurry up because she needed to do a blood test. So we all piled back into the car. Mummy then got out this funny looking square thing that she told me was called an Opt something or other I think she

Said (Optium exceed blood test machine) then mummy used this other funny thing that must have really hurt it chewed a hole in her finger and all this blood came out. Then mummy put the blood on this funny long piece of plastic and the machine then showed a number. Mummy said that her BSL was not right and she then gave me extra big kisses and cuddles and told me I was a very good boy for alerting her. I did not understand what that meant but I loved the kisses and cuddles and the strange but familiar smell.

I was a very good boy in the car on the way home I didn't even cry once. Mummy told me she was very pleased with me, she told me she loves me and gave me lots of hugs and kisses.

When we got home I met my brother Jack the black poodle. Jack and I had fun playing running races. . We also played ball too he is so much fun. Jack has funny eyes though and sometimes he can't see as well as me and will walk or run into things. Jack is getting old I heard mummy say he also has cat acts I think she called them (cataracts). Soon they say poor Jack will be blind but that is ok cause if I can help mummy I am sure I can help Jack too. They have guide dogs for people who can't see so maybe I can be a guide dog for a dog hey? Isn't that why they call me Winston the Wonder Whippet? I think Jack and I will be very good mates.

Mummy says that I am a special puppy and I am allowed to go with her everywhere I have been with mummy to her doctors and hospital appointments, I have been to the shops with mummy, I have been to mummy's quilting classes and I have even been on a holiday to Fairbridge in Pinjarra  too. Mummy calls the holiday to Fairbridge in Pinjarra a Quilters Retreat. I like to meet all the doctors and nurses and all of mummy's friends. But no one is allowed to pat me only mummy cause she says I am special, I am scent trained and if others were to pat me then it could interfere with my scent training and I may not react quick enough to mummy's hypos and I may forget to alert her. I don't want this to happen because I would miss out on all of mummy's kisses and hugs and I really really love my mummy.
I even have a special coat to wear too the coat says that I am a Paws for Diabetics Inc Medical Assistance Dog this means I tell mummy when she is going to have a hypo.

My coat is special when I wear it I know I am working and it's sort of like when Clark Kent puts on his coat he turns into Superman.

When I put on my coat I turn into dud dud da Winston the Wonder Whippet.
