Wallangarra 'Hypo" dog now fully accredited

SEP 23, 2005

Saki is a diabetes 'hypo' alert dog, providing assistance to her owner, after completing all her training.

Lorraine Roulston from Wallangarra said following the training her dog Saki is now officially a hypo-alert service dog, accompanying Lorraine who is diabetic.

"She's passed her test and now fully accredited," Lorraine said.

"We believe she's the very first one in Australia."

A Public Access Test was included, which Mrs Roulston said all service dogs have to pass, including guide dogs.

She said Saki had done most of the required activities previously, so there were only a few new experiences for her.

"She'd never been inside shopping centres so I had to take her in there," she said.

Saki's training was provided by the North Queensland branch of Association of Australian Assistance Dogs.
