NewsLetters to the editorPaws cause - Community Newspapers A GOOD friend of ours has Type 1 diabetes. This has affected her life medically and financially, with she and her family having to leave their rental home and move closer to Perth for health support services. Her husband has had to become her full-time carer as it was becoming unsafe for her to be left alone because of her diabetes. Recently she has been the beneficiary of a whippet puppy called Winston from an amazing non-profit organisation called Paws for Diabetics that trains dogs to recognise hypoglycaemic episodes — low blood sugar. These dogs alert their owners to check their blood sugar levels. The accuracy of these dogs is remarkable. A hypoglycaemic episode left untreated can lead to coma and even death. As a non-profit organisation Paws for Diabetics must cover the cost of training and certifying dogs for hypoglycaemic alert, which can cost up to $20,000 each. They also train recipients in the proper care and use of Paws for Diabetics assistance dogs —and work on educating organisations, businesses and the general public about the rights of assistance dogs and their handlers. We hope that people might make a donation to Paws for Diabetics to help them. Donations over $2 are tax deductible and more information can be found at www.pfd.org.au GAI WALKER AND LIZ FORD Mozzies Quilters Sound Telegraph 15.10.08
