Welcome mat out for Oscar

Parmelia resident Tracey Charles has expressed her relief at finding a local school that agreed to cater for her son’s special needs.
Corey (12), who has type 1 diabetes, has a specially trained dog, Oscar, who alerts him whenever his blood sugar level drops.
When Oscar senses any change in Corey’s behaviour, he tries to get his attention, or the attention of another person if that fails.
Mrs Charles said she had had to take Corey out of Calista Primary School after the Education Department told her it was not acceptable to have a dog in the classroom.
However, she had since enrolled Corey in Peter Carnley Anglican Community School in Wellard.
“I can’t speak anymore highly of them; they’ve been great,” she said.
“We haven’t had any problems with some of the issues that were given as reasons for him not being allowed to attend Calista with Oscar.”
Mrs Charles said it was a relief to find a school for Corey.
“Dealing with Diabetes in the family is enough stress on its own,” she said. “We haven’t looked back.”
