Anita and Mika

I knew I had quite a few hypos and at times struggled with the day to day riggers of Diabetes. But I never thought I was having as many as I was until Mika arrived and started alerting me.  Mika started alerting very quickly and has only missed one hypo; I think this was because I was rather ill which required a stay in hospital for the day. With such a long day Mika was so exhausted she just had to sleep. I was reassured that this was okay being she is only 4 months old and had lots of learning to do still.

Even with only a couple of months together we have bonded very quickly and have a special relationship. Mika has brought a little more freedom into my life and she has allowed my confidence to grow knowing I have a back up which in the past was my elderly parents. I was told it would be hard work and at times it has, but I am already getting the rewards.

Mika accompanies me to work every day and loves all the attention, but I think I have become invisible. Lots of people ask me how her days have been going, but what about me. That’s okay though I think I can live with that. She behaviours very well and sleeps at my feet under my desk. Most people don’t even know she is there.

I have had very few negatives comments or reactions so far, only people that don’t understand why they can’t touch Mika and I do my best to educate about working dogs in the community and diabetes. Just like guide dogs help the visually impaired, Mika helps me.

My parents have found they are finally relaxing a lot more now knowing  that Mika is on duty and working very well.  The change that has happened in my life has been enormous, but I have not regretted it and hope that we continue to be a great working team.

Look at me I can sit on Command
